(On Rumplestiltskin's voice)“There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’”
There's something about these performances in the past few years. In a slight sense it’s about age but without a doubt it has also given me what I used to call weight. I remember when I was in Scotland and I first started acting with these older actors and they had weight. They didn’t have to act. It was just there. I think I’m finally on that path to gravitas.“
“I feel with TV you’re allowed more freedom. With television there’s more time to create something through the episodes. The fact that you’re working harder on the surface seems more difficult, but you get into a way of working where if you’re not allowed to stop and breathe and think about it, you just go on instinctively, which is the way I prefer anyway. It becomes a more spontaneous thing.” (about Mr Gold) “I try to keep him absolutely neutral,” he says. “I almost do [Mr. Gold] in slow motion. It’s the exact opposite of what I’m doing with Rumpelstiltskin. He resonates calm. There’s not many times as an actor you get to play the opposite ends of the scale.”
“I’ll spare you the actors’ pretentious rubbish, but a face reflects experience, so if you concentrate on a character something happens to you physically. Many actors look at the costume before the part, and that seems crazy to me. It’s much more fun to be ugly. Not that I think I’m ugly, but I’ve never considered myself good-looking.” Fairytale Scene of the Moment source Storybrooke Scene of the Moment source

“For me, it’s a voyage of self-discovery. I’m able to go on a set and to explore situations, personalities, people and characters that are close to me, or maybe not. Through going there and experiencing these different people and their situations, it helps me to get oriented and develop as a human being. So, acting is fundamental to who I am.”

Er, random side thing: Rumple's spinning wheel I realized something about the two types of spinning wheels we see Rumple use. I'd wondered before why he has a different kind as poor spinner than he does as Dark One Rumple. Then, he goes back to the other one in Storybrooke. The funny thing is my brain works differently when I'm writing stories. I was doing a scene from DO Rumple's POV. I'd looked up info on the different types before when I first got curious. I knew how they worked and how they were used. I looked it up again before writing the scene. I went into the scene expecting to write about why Rumple spun different kinds of thread, thinking I was going to say something about his poverty. Instead, I wrote DO Rumple thinking how he'd had a wheel like this before the war and gotten rid of it when his leg was injured. You have to stand using that wheel. My inner narrator had him thinking about how he hadn't been able to stand for HOURS the way he had to in order to use that kind of wheel. I just stared at what I'd written with a "oh, duh" sort of look. So, crippled* Rumple couldn't use that kind of wheel. DO Rumple could. SB Rumple with a bad leg* couldn't use it either. It just weirds me out a little how I realized it. . . . *I know it's the same injury, but Spinner Rumple is crippled--whether it's in his head or a reality of how his society treats him, that's the word for it. Whether it's in his head and he makes sure the thought crawls in through the ears and eats out the brains of anyone who harbors any idea of doubting it or another explanation, SB Rumple is a man with a limp. And no one questions this. |

I don't understand what you are trying to say. Rumple has been shown using a great wheel (also called a walking wheel) while standing in the dark castle but also while sitting, which is not how such wheels are used. We see him sitting at a Saxony wheel in Storybrooke and young Rumple is seen spinning on a Norwegian wheel while the two spinsters use great wheels. Rumple also taught Cora to spin on a castle style wheel that was modified to include a fanciful straw feeder, which wouldn't work in reality, but it sure looked good while Rumple was nuzzling Cora's neck.
The lady who supplies the wheels and dresses them on set once posted on Ravelry that they decided which wheel to use in a scene based on the blocking, space available, and the look they wanted. The camera man also told her to put the drive band on the great wheel incorrectly so it wouldn't ruin his shots of Robert Carlyle's face. All of the wheels have been rigged to look good in the scenes but at the same time have been rendered useless for actual spinning. They make no attempt to be consistent or accurate, so I don't think one can draw any conclusions about why Rumple uses a particular wheel from looking at what kind of wheel he is using in any given scene. I also don't understand all the random bolding in your post. |

Ah, random bolding. I use it sometimes more than emoticons to try and either imply a tone of verbal emphasis or show that I'm getting to the main point. I can be a tediously fact-oriented type at times. I have trouble knowing which of fifty bits of data aren't really essential to the conversation and ought to be dropped (I try, I really do). So, bolding is both a verbal emphasis indicator and an attempt to help someone who is skimming and not all that interested see the point at the end of the fifty random factoids. So: Rumple's Spinning Wheel: This is bolded as the introduction of main topic. Anyone who can't imagine this being interesting already knows to stop. The bolded before and knew: This is bolding meant to imply emphasizing it in speech, to show I am slightly hitting myself over the head with the fact that I had all the data to make a conclusion but hadn't seen the implications that (without your knowledge of how they did it in the show) seemed fairly obvious when they occurred to me. Hence, emphasis on knowing and knowing for some time yet failure to see. again: This is bolding is meant to point out frustration with being a bit thick and still not getting it. and gotten rid of it when his leg was injured, stand hadn't been able to stand for HOURS These three were emphasized for pretty much the same reason. The type of wheel we typically see at the Dark Castle would have been harder for a man with an injured leg to use. The giving of the thought process that led to this (apparently mistaken) realization is partly because I found it funny. But, I find odd thought processes interesting and sometimes amusing. I've also learned that I don't get quite as many weird looks when I explain my thought process (although that's usually when I need to explain how I got from point A to point B when going from one to the other seems completely random without the explanation. In this case, it's the link itself that's weird, not the connection made). I still find it interesting the way changing mental gears, going from a point by point data-oriented examination to just imagining what it felt like to do it, can lead to different insights (even if the insight was wrong). |
